Enric Bordas and Juan Angel Rosso both claimed victories in TCR Spain during the series visit to Circuito de Navarra for the NAPA Racing Weekend last Saturday and Sunday (24/25 June).
A line-up of 11 drivers turned out for the opening event of the 2023 TCR Spain season. The grids for the two races were determined in separate qualifying sessions with Juan Angel Rosso setting the pace in the first of these in his Comtoyou Audi RS3 LMS. Rosso appeared also to have the edge in the second qualifying session before Enric Bordas edged him out in his Monlau Motorsport Cupra Leon.
Rosso led Saturday’s first race of the weekend during its initial stages, but the Argentine driver quickly faced pressure from Bordas who forced a move. This came after Bordas received a five-second penalty for jumping the start, meaning the Spaniard would have to build a gap if he were to win the race.
Rosso did everything he could to chase Bordas, but the Monlau Motorsport driver managed to build a cushion to his rival large enough to neutralise his penalty. Whilst Bordas drove home impressively to a victory with a margin of 2.8s once the penalty was factored in, Rosso was forced to settle for second, just ahead of his Comtoyou teammate Alvaro Garcia.
Sergio Casalins of Volcano Motorsport was just over six seconds further adrift of the podium runners when he crossed the line in fourth, with Igor Urien rounding up the top-five in his Cupra Leon.
The competitors returned to the grid on Sunday, with the order inverted to put Antonio Albacete’s Peugeot 308 on pole position. Albacete made a good start to lead initially, but a super-fast getaway from Rosso allowed the race one runner-up to fire himself immediately into overall contention from further down the grid.
Rosso was in the lead by the end of the second lap, whilst race one winner Bordas struggled to make his way through traffic. At the front Rosso was forced to defend hard from Comtoyou teammate Garcia. He held on to win though, with the two Audis crossing the line first and second with Bordas eventually completing a drive to the podium in third.
As in race one, Sergio Casalins and Igor Urien completed the top-five.
