Ivo Lopes won the second ESBK Spanish Superbike Championship race of the weekend at Circuito de Navarra this afternoon (Sunday).
The BMW easyRace Team rider secured a superb victory after starting lower down on the grid, moving up from ninth on the first lap to be in the podium positions by the end of the second lap. Lopes subsequently made a move into second before defeating reigning champion Steven Odendaal with a brilliant last corner overtake on the final lap to win by just 0.261s.
Odendaal had led much of the race, despite a short red flag period due to a weather disruption, but could not hold off the charging Lopes who mastered the mixed conditions to bounce back from a disappointing first race of the weekend that saw him finish down in 11th place.
Yesterday’s race winner Francisco J. Palomera completed the podium in third, after pressuring the top two in the final stages of the race. Ville Valtonen was fourth, a further six seconds behind, with Mauro Gonzalez rounding out the top five.
Behind them came Anton Eremin, Javier del Olmo, Charles Aubrie, Julio Dominguez and Javier Artime in tenth.
