F4 Spanish Championship points leader Kasper Schormans took pole position in Qualifying 1 as the competitive element of the Circuito de Navarra weekend got underway this morning (Saturday).
Schormans rose to the top, late during a first qualifying session which was twice interrupted by a red flag. Prior to the second of these, it was Nathan Tye who topped the times, but the pace accelerated during a final nine-minute run to the flag. A number of drivers traded quickest times at the head of the standings during the closing moments but it was MP Motorsport driver Schormans' time of 1m46.315s which proved best of all.
That was 0.107s clear of the next best time, that of Drivex contender Elliot Kaczynski. Rocco Coronel, in another MP Motorsport entry was another to threaten for pole but ultimately had to settle for third, just under two tenths adrift of his teammate Schormans. The top five was completed by Borys Lyzen and Vivek Kanthan, with just over two tenths separating that whole group.
Daniel Kelleher and Jensen Burnett were sixth and seventh, just ahead of Tye, who slipped to eighth once full-speed running resumed. Max Radeck and Noah Monteiro completed the top 10. This leaves Monteiro, second in the championship to Schormans, with a lot of work to do in the races to keep the pressure on in the title fight.
