F4 Spanish Championship: Schormans claims Race 1 victory at Circuito de Navarra

Points leader Kasper Schormans has enjoyed a perfect start to his F4 Spanish Championship weekend at Circuito de Navarra after claiming victory in Race 1. He was followed home by the Red Bull-backed Rocco Coronel in second and Nathan Tye in third.

Polesitter Schormans held the lead from the start, closely followed by DriveX's Elliot Kaczynski and Coronel behind.

After maintaining fourth for the majority of the first lap, Borys Lyzen then ran wide and suffered a puncture, relegating him to the back of the field. That gave the top three some breathing space as a multi-car battle for fifth place, led by Nathan Tye, commenced.

While holding on to ninth, DXR’s Max Radeck then ran wide and across the grass, but managed to maintain position, as Schormans began to stretch his advantage at the front to two seconds. Kaczynski in second continued to be hounded by MP Motorsport’s Coronel, with just six tenths separating the two with 18 minutes to go.

The battle for fourth place quickly warmed up, with Tye finding his way past Griffin Core’s Vivek Kanthan, who dropped down to eighth after suffering front wing damage.

Back at the front, the top three remained stagnant with seven minutes on the clock, while Noah Monteiro, second in the drivers’ championship standings, diced with Campos Racing’s Daniel Kelleher for fifth.

With a handful of laps to go, Ty Fisher collided with Kanthan, leaving the Griffin Core driver facing the wrong way.

As the chequered flag fell, Schormans crossed the line six seconds ahead of his nearest competitor. Kaczynski was demoted from second to ninth after the application of two post-race time penalties for track limits violations, with Coronel promoted to second and Tye third.

Kelleher pipped Monteiro to fourth, with Jensen Burnett closing the race in sixth. Radeck, Fisher, Kaczynski and Kanthan rounded out the top ten in Race 1.
